The city of Tabriz is situated 600 km west of Teheran and one of the largest cities in Iran and also the captial in the province of Azerbajdzjan. . It is one of the oldest rug weaving centers and makes a diverse range of carpets. A popular design in the House of Haghi range of Tabriz rugs is that of the large central medallion (Mahi or fish) on a field of Herati (diamonds) framed by an intricate floral border.  Usually they are constructed from a combination of wool and silk, giving a unique and wonderful appearance. The central medallion also features in other designs, along with pictorial scenes and figures, flora and fauna.
