A Shiraz carpet is a type of Persian rug handmade in the surrounding villages of Shiraz, in the Iranian province of Fars. In the 13th century, Shiraz became the leading centre of arts and letters. The King encouraged the presence of many Persian scholars and artists. Shiraz was the original area where the well-known Shiraz grapes are grown. Tribal in design and hand-knotted in 100% wool. Various plants and natural materials are used for dying wool. The design features bold medallions running through the centre of the rug and is framed by a mix of floral and geometric motifs on the border.
